Checklist
Household manager checklist: the first 90 days
Hiring the right person is half the work. This is the handoff plan that turns a great hire into a home that runs without you holding it together.
01Before day one
- Signed agreement with hours, pay, duties, and notice period
- Background check and references complete
- Household card or reimbursement method set up
- Shared calendar and messaging thread created
- Emergency contacts, doctors, and school contacts written down
02Week one — orientation
- Walk the whole home: utilities, shutoffs, alarm, thermostat, filters
- Introduce the family routine: wake, school, activities, dinner, bedtime
- Hand over keys, codes, garage, and parking details
- List current vendors with contact info and last service date
- Agree on communication rules: what needs approval, what doesn't
03Weeks two to four — systems
- Build the master household calendar with recurring tasks
- Create a supplies inventory and restock thresholds
- Set up a vendor log with rates, cadence, and warranty info
- Document a grocery and meal-planning rhythm
- Establish a weekly 20-minute sync and a written weekly recap
04Months two and three — ownership
- Hand off vendor scheduling entirely
- Run one organization project start to finish (pantry, garage, closets)
- Review spend against the monthly household budget
- Write the household manual so any fill-in could step in
- Formal 90-day review: what's working, what to add, rate check
